Fake details hamper probe

AT THE DEWAN RAKYAT
REPORTS by ZULKIFLI ABD RAHMAN, SIM LEOI LEOI AND LOH FOON FONG

POLICE cannot trace the people behind SMS phone scams because 99% of the numbers were registered using false personal particulars.

“Investigations into the numbers used to call the victims revealed that the addresses were false, hampering efforts to track down the perpetrators,” Deputy Home Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung told Hamim Samuri (BN – Ledang).

He said the public had been warned through SMS alerts, advertisements and notices to be on guard and not reply to dubious SMS offers.

There was also cooperation with Indonesian police since most of the SMSes sent to victims originated from that country, he said.

Chor said the victims were drawn by greed in believing that they would be rewarded by taking up the offers.

He told Er Teck Hwa (DAP – Bakri) that police recorded 728 cases of dubious SMS alerts with losses of RM1.8mil last year. In 2007, 965 cases were reported by victims who lost RM2.1mil. In 2006, 318 cases were reported with losses of RM548,725.27.

“During the last two years, 55 people were arrested for their involvement in these scams.
