MALAYSIANS have been advised to watch what they eat before they become like the Americans, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad said.
“Sixty-three per cent of Americans are all besar dan kembang (big and bloated), obese,” he said when replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadiq (BN – Tenggara).
Halimah had asked if the ministry had plans to educate society about keeping a healthy lifestyle.
Dr Abdul Latiff said it would not be easy to change the people’s lifestyle, adding that a person needed strong will and determination.
He said most people were used to their eating habits.
“For example, it used to be all right if a man ate rice five times a day because of hard labour. But today, the man continues to have rice five times a day even though he has an office job,” said Dr Abdul Latiff.
Earlier, while replying to the original question from Er Teck Hwa (DAP – Bakri), Dr Abdul Latiff said there were 180 kidney dialysis patients for every million residents in Johor.
He said that in 2007, there were 102 end-stage renal disease patients who needed treatment.
